8 Rules of Love
The book "8 Rules of Love: How to Find It, Keep It, and Let It Go" by Jay Shetty provides 8 viewpoints for how to approach love based on the 4 ashrams of Hinduism. I chose this book because Jay Shetty is one of my role models. Overall, this book had good stories, activities, and lessons. However, there was nothing ground-breaking or pulled me out of my chair.
Analysis
The writing style is split up into 4 sections using the ashrams: preparing love, practicing love, protecting love, and perfecting love. Each lesson includes multiple activities for self-reflection and has stories from both Jay’s experience along with others to highlight the key messages. The message was succinct and flowed well.
Takeaways
I had two main takeaways: 1/ a framework for breaking down purpose and 2/ how to view your partner.
For the framework on purpose, Jay breaks it down into 5 areas: learn, experiment, thrive, struggle, and win. This framework follows a similar practice I had while working on different projects in corporate where we did discovery (learn), a 6-week sprint (experiment, thrive, and struggle), and win (finish the project).
For viewing your partner, Jay talks about seeing them as a guru who can help you on your own journey and theirs. This allows for continual aid but not seeking them to be your sole purpose. Therefore, it makes me see who is learning similar skills, has similar values, and imagines a future similar to mine to deduce whether we would be a good match.
Conclusion
In conclusion, "8 Rules of Love: How to Find It, Keep It, and Let It Go" by Jay Shetty offers valuable insights and advice into love that makes sense and is not groundbreaking.
